How to Begin NABH Accreditation Preparation with a Gap Analysis

Before preparing SOPs or introducing new procedures, hospitals should first conduct a NABH gap analysis to understand how their existing practices compare with the applicable accreditation standards.
What Is NABH Gap Analysis?
NABH gap analysis is a systematic assessment of a hospital’s current systems, processes, and practices against the applicable NABH requirements. It helps identify areas that meet the standards, areas that need improvement, and requirements that have not yet been implemented.
How to Conduct a NABH Gap Analysis
1. Review Applicable NABH Standards
Identify the standards relevant to the hospital’s scope of services. Break them down into clear requirements that can be assessed across the relevant departments.
2. Assess Current Practices
Evaluate how each requirement is currently addressed in practice. Review existing policies, patient records, registers, staff practices, infrastructure, and safety procedures. Verify implementation rather than relying on documentation alone.
3. Identify and Classify Gaps
Record each deficiency under the appropriate category:
Documentation gaps: Missing or incomplete policies, SOPs, forms, or records.
Implementation gaps: Existing procedures that are not consistently followed.
Infrastructure gaps: Deficiencies in facilities, equipment, or safety arrangements.
Training gaps: Staff who lack the required awareness or competency.
Monitoring gaps: Missing audits, quality indicators, or performance reviews.
4. Prioritise the Findings
Prioritise gaps based on patient safety, regulatory requirements, and their impact on compliance. Assign each finding a responsible department, corrective action, and target completion date.
5. Prepare a Gap Analysis Report
Consolidate the findings into a department-wise report showing the applicable requirement, current status, identified gap, priority, responsible person, and action required. This report becomes the basis for planning targeted improvements.
Why Is Gap Analysis Important?
A structured NABH gap analysis helps hospitals avoid unnecessary documentation, identify critical deficiencies early, and direct resources towards areas that require attention. It also ensures that SOPs and policies are developed based on actual gaps rather than created as a standalone documentation exercise.
